VIA STOCKALPER - Val Bognanco

Descrizione

This is one of the 12 Cultural Itineraries of national interest in Switzerland. Its importance was already determined in the XVII century by Baron Kaspar Jodock Stockalper, the “Sempione King”, who for commercial reasons ensured a wide mule track be built along tracts which are still currently part of the itinerary. Following this same track in 1805, Napoleon set this way to be built as a carriageable way crossing the Alps in order to allow for troops and arms to flow across the Sempione Mountain Pass. From the Monscera Mountain Pass, an ancient communication and commerce way passed between the Ossola Valley and the Vallese canton, allowing it to be used by the Vallese troupes which repeatedly invaded Ossola and through which Pope Gregory X traveled on his way back from the Lion Council.

The “Stockalper Way” in its entirety is made up of the "Stockalperweg", which from the Stockalper Castle at Briga goes back up to the Sempione Mountain Pass and then goes down to Gondo, and the “Monscera Way”, which starts at the Sacred Mount Calvario of Domodossola where the house where Baron Stockalper used to reside and the Paradise Chapel witnesses his presence. The “Stockalper Way” then goes back up the Bognanco Valley and up to the Monscera Mountain Pass and then goes back down through Zwischbergental, down to Gondo.

Along the path it is possible to visit the Sacred Mount Calvario at Domodossola (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Sempione Ecomuseum (the Stockalper Castle at Briga, the lodge at Sempione Village, the Napoleonic barracks, the fort at the Gondo gulley, and the Gold Museum at Gondo), not to mention the Napoleonic hospice of Sempione now managed by the canons of the Great Saint Bernardo Congregation.

Useful Information:

This itinerary is marked with track number D00 in the Italian territory and with the brown track sign “Stockalperweg” and number 90 in the Swiss territory.

A26 motorway towards Gravellona Toce, from here SS33 del Sempione, exit Domodossola. You can reach the parking lot of the Vigezzina Railway and through pedestrian underpass the station of Domodossola, Ferrovie dello Stato.
