Sestriere TO
Italy
The Gravel Race route follows the “Strada dell’Assietta” at an altitude of over 2,000 metres, through a stunning mountain landscape, creating a comprehensive, spectacular, panoramic, challenging and enjoyable mountain course. The route starts from Sestriere (2,035 m), a place that certainly needs no introduction, and heads towards Monte Rotta. From there, it climbs up the Gelindo Bordin path (2,218 m), before descending towards Sestriere and joining the ski run that crosses the main road to Pinerolo. Continuing along the Val Chisone, you first reach Sestriere Borgata and then Pragelato, descending from here to Pourrieres (1,418 m), where you turn off towards Balboutet. Here the ascent becomes steep, passing through the hamlet of Balboutet (1,557 m) and continuing on to Pian dell’Alpe, climbing through pastures and coniferous woods until reaching the beautiful alpine basin of Pian dell’Alpe, at an altitude of 1,821 m. Continue towards Colle delle Finestre, then turn left onto the Assietta dirt track, which offers splendid views down towards the valley floor, reaching the final stretch leading to Colle dell’Assietta (2,472 m). The view is austere, to say the least superb, and after a short stretch of steep climb, you reach the summit of Assietta at an altitude of 2,567 metres. From here begins the rapid descent that takes us to Col Lauson (2,497 m) and then Col Blegier (2,381 m), followed by a short climb leading to Monte Genevris (2,533 m), then the descent to Costa Piana, followed by Col Bourget (2,299 m) and, at the end of the Assietta road, Col Basset (2,424 m), the final peak of the route before the descent to Sestriere. After about 2.5 km of descent, turn onto the Gelindo Bordin path (2,218 m) and follow it until you reach the outskirts of Sestriere, where you descend directly to the finish at Piazza Fraiteve.
