The stage: Rivoli–Colle delle Finestre–Sestriere Vialattea (101 km) – As in several previous stages of the Giro d’Italia, the route climbs the Colle delle Finestre (Cima Alfonsina Strada at 2,178 m) and then the Colle del Sestriere, finishing at the international tourist resort. The first 50 km are flat before the Finestre, with its 18 km climb – half tarmac and half gravel – all at an average gradient of around 9%, with peaks of 14% in the opening kilometres. A challenging descent follows, then the final climb where every ounce of power will be needed to open up gaps. Colle delle Finestre, a multiple Cima Coppi, was included for the first time in 2005. Saturday 6 June: start from Rivoli, entry into the Val di Susa and, from Meana di Susa, the ascent to Colle delle Finestre. From here, the riders will head into the Val Chisone and tackle the climb to the finish line at 2,035 metres in Sestriere, where this year’s Maglia Rosa will be awarded.
